Yellowstone Canyon

Yellowstone Canyon.

Yellowstone Canyon.

The canyon of the Yellowstone River, located in the north-central area of Yellowstone National Park near the entrance at Gardiner-Mammoth, is one of the park’s most striking natural features. Carved out by the force of the Yellowstone River, the deep, broad canyon is easily accessed from numerous parking areas along both rims.

All offer easy connections to the many trails that skirt the upper edge of the canyon, and there are several trail options that dive down into the depths for those who do not mind heights and rickety stairs.

The breathtaking views have inspired numerous writers, artists and photographers. As an added bonus, the canyon area tends to be slightly less crowded than some of Yellowstone’s other hot spots, like Old Faithful and the many roadside geysers and hotpots. If you are in the neighborhood, take in the canyon view and see what inspiration comes.
